Bought this with some Jolly Phonics cards and have since bought other sets and Hot Dots sets too. I got this in a bid to encourage my little boy to read / spell but in a more interactive 'boy orientated' way. He loves using the pen and is very good at getting it on the dot exactly so that the correct response is given. Sometimes he enjoys 'tricking me' - partly just so he can hear the other responses the pen gives! The other reviewers are right that it is quite sensitive, but this doesn't stop my son from really enjoying using it. He's learnt that if it gives a negative rsponse just to check it again to see if it was he or then pen who was 'getting confused'! At 5 1/2 he happily uses it on his own and will call me if he's not sure about one of the cards. He loves the praise the pen gives with each correct answer and at under £3 as it is as I write this (I paid nmore than double) I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this; I still recommend it at the price I paid too!

A good idea if the child is reluctant to learn, 3 Sept. 2014
First one did not work and had to wait for a replacement which, as a birthday present was annoying. Once replaced it did work ok, the whole thing is quite expensive for what it is though. There are different types of puzzles/games to buy to add to the collection but they do not need a pen to work them!

Pen to work with Jolly Phonics Hot Dots. Supports the successful phonics system used in many schools to learn of sounds and letters. When the pen is pressed on the hot dots cards (buy separate) it tells the user if they have selected the correct answer. Disappointed it does not make the sound of the different letters.
