Suitable for 6 – 36 months, this colourful tea set has three different levels of play: Explore (6m+), Encourage (12m+) and Pretend (18m+). The teapot has a large button and is easy for baby to press, causing the teapot to sing and it also questions and prompts to encourage your little one to follow simple instructions and interact with the toy.
The tea set comes with the teapot, two teacups and a stacking cake and offers lots of fun and imaginative play. The teapot is really central to the set and has several songs, phrases and sounds. However, stacking the cake is obviously good fun and slightly older babies will enjoy ‘pouring’ the tea and having tea parties. It would have been lovely had there been some kind of drawstring bag to keep the pieces together, but generally, as you would expect from Fisher-Price, this is a quality toy which aims to teach colours, manners, sharing and greetings. Over the years, with 4 children and 10 grandchildren, I have failed to fully appreciate why playing with tea-sets is so attractive and addictive, and I’ve assumed it is the simplicity of the toy and the scope for mimicking play. This ‘Fisher-Price Tea Set’ is quite limited with just a teapot, 2 cups, and a 3-layered stacking cake – but no sugar bowl, milk jug or spoons which restrict opportunities for sharing.
The teapot has been brought up to date by incorporating sounds – tea glugging, songs, phrases etc. with 3 combinations of sounds to suit increasing ages of children and their capacity to learn – and this feature is marketed as a development aid to teach manners, counting, colours etc. This battery driven technological approach comes at the expense of a sealed teapot that cannot be filled with liquid – an obvious drawback.
