We bought for our spare bed to protect against bed bugs (in a tropical climate) and for protection against small human accidents. There are more expensive encasements (which we bought for our main bed). The cotten is light and breathable - have not tested it's waterproofness, but overall pleased with this for our spare beds but forked out a bit more for the master.
